I keep saying that I want to share more about our homes but I get so caught up in fashion and fun! I do plan on writing an awesome blog at some point on what it was like to completely remodel two homes at once….Yes, that is right, we had two complete remodels at the same time in California and Texas. (Not suggested that to anyone btw. Unless you’re just in the mood to test your nerves or your marriage :). But for now, I want to zone in on a couple specific areas of the Texas home, the family room and the bunk room. I think you’ll find the details very interesting, including a surprise review on a MAJOR furniture choice that most of us would DIE to have!
I am here in Texas this week helping my sister recover from back surgery and to spend time with my daughter and her friends for her 31st birthday, so these two major areas will get used A LOT! When Joe and I bought the Texas home, it is what I would call “outdated”. But the second we walked into the home, I immediately saw its potential, especially these two areas.
Let’s start with the family room. First of all, what an incredibly large room. I visualized some serious dance parties happening! (I actually threw my sister’s 50th surprise birthday party at the house during the delightful covid years and the converted dance floor was perfect.) But before any party could get started, the room needed some love. The biggest problem was the fireplace. Having it in the corner of the room created two problems; it made the room feel smaller and out of balance. Moving the fireplace to the center of the room was KEY! We used our builder to install a modern, gas fireplace. For anyone wanting to achieve this look it’s not as hard as you think. Your builder simply runs the existing line and vent over to the new location. Some other major improvements were all new paint, built in shelves with LED lights, and new hardwood floors. If you take a look at the before and after, there’s no way you won’t just simply adore the new look!

Now let’s talk DECOR!!! I’m going to start with the one and only negative. Although I LOVE the look of the Restoration Hardware cloud couch, I would NEVER buy it again! It’s not a cloud. It’s more like a large bean bag you sink into and you have to yell for help to get out. The areas that get sat in the most get dented quickly and fluffing them up does not help! Since this purchase, I have discovered another brand that I love called 7th Avenue. It’s more firm, stain resistant, and literally half the cost. The last time I bought 7th Avenue was when I remodeled my step daughters home and she absolutely loves it!
I’m OBSESSED with the rest! I have two large rugs, which as you can see you can lie diagonally instead of the traditional way. The coffee tables, end tables, and decor pieces all create a design focusing on clean lines, a sleek-streamlined modern feel, and most importantly 100% functionality! Lastly, we added LED strips in the shelves and installed a fabulous chandelier, which set the mood for all the fun parties! We have had casino nights, dance parties, game nights, and silent discos in our family room. We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.
Fun Fact…..all the vases and hand made objects inside the LED shelves are from different cities Joe and I have traveled over the years. My favorite is the top right from Costa Rica. It was carved by a local out of walnut adding bobbed wire to create her unique face.
When I first saw this space, the prior owner used this room for sewing and a kids toy room. Well lucky for me I don’t sew and I don’t have young kids! Thank you Jesus :). But I do work out on a regularly and even though we have five bedroom home, we knew that would not be enough. Our home has become the place where our three grown kids love coming for the weekend with all their friends, and Joe and I host our friends on the regular basis. A quick example……we were in Texas the months of May and June this year. Out of two months, there was literally ONE weekend we were not hosting!
The first thing we did was cover up the existing window with dry wall so it had a visual appeal and the bunk beds would fit. I found my favorite bunk bed pics on Pinterest and had our local carpenter build the beds. I put in built in drawers for storage, installed plug in reading lights for each bed, and added seriously comfortable mattresses and soft bedding. Adding the mirror makes the room feel even larger and is great for staring at yourself doing bicep curls. What’s my favorite thing in the bunk room? THE CHANDELIER! Isn’t it just adorable?
PRO TIP: Simplify your space! Displaying all you own creates more chaos than beauty and shatters that peace and tranquil feel you are going for. If your goal is to have an inviting, warm home, avoid the chaos and remember less is more 🙂
“A house is built by wisdom, and it is established by understanding; by knowledge the rooms are filled with every precious and beautiful treasure.” Proverbs 23:3-4
